Approximately 200 cases per year, performing either pars plana vitrectomy or scleral buckling procedures for such conditions as retinal detachment, advanced diabetic retinopathy, macular holes and epiretinal membranes.

Approximately 250 cases per year of cataract removal and lens implantation.

Performs and supervises approximately 10-15 laser procedures each week (Slit Lamp, Indirect, Endolaser and Transcleral) for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and retinal tears. A number of lasers are used, including an infrared diode laser, for which I was one of the pioneers in developing and introducing for ophthalmic treatments.

The "Anti-VEGF" compounds, Lucentis, Avastin and Eylea are administered not only for the treatment of macular degeneration, but also for cases of diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein thrombosis which are resistant to conventional therapy. The long-acting steroid compounds, Ozurdex and Iluvien are also used for the treatment of macular oedema secondary to a number of retinal vascular conditions.

Mr McHugh has been acting as an expert witness in medicolegal cases for the past 14 years. He accepts briefs for both personal injury claims (for example occupational and assault-related) and for allegations of medical malpractice. He has provided specialist opinions for both defendant, and claimants and co-authored joint expert reports. He has presented evidence in court under cross examination.
